Manuscript Topics
Welding has been extensively used in the construction of buildings and bridges and in the aircraft, automotive, aerospace, electronic industries, etc. Losses of property and even life because of the failure of structures are often traced to defective welds. How to avoid the defects and obtain sound welds has long been a subject of interest for researchers and engineers.
By far, many welding methods have been developed, such as arc welding, laser welding, electric beam welding, fricition stir welding, ultrasonic welding, etc. Significant progresses have been made in understanding the existing welding process and welding materials, and thus avoiding weld defects. However, the underlying mechanisms have not been understood well, and weld defects like pores, spatters, cracking, collapse, are still inevitable, especially for some new materials and welding techniques. With the rapid development of computer science, physically sound mathematical and numerical modeling, prediction of welding process become a better alternative for understanding the process. The topics include, but are not limited to:
• Heat transfer and fluid flow during welding
• Microstructure formation mechanism and its prediction during welding
• Defect formation mechanism and its prediction during welding
• Process optimization for welding
• Welding process monitoring and controlling
• New welding techniques
