Manuscript Topics
Heavy metals cause serious impacts to the environment, due to bioaccumulation effect, its toxicity, exposure-related cancer risk, posing threats to environmental ecology and human health. Pollution by heavy metals has increased during the last decades caused by industrial, agricultural and mining activities. The investigation of eco-friendly remediation techniques is an emergent field. The use of natural resources, in particular bioadsorvents have showed excellent efficiencies. This special issue on the topic: Bioremediation of heavy metals using algae: Recent advances presents the most recent innovative findings on the use of microalgae in the removal of heavy metals from heavy metals polluted waters. Microalgae has very good tolerance and response to heavy metals, their bioaccumulation efficiency and by-products add-value make them good bioremediation solutions.
This Special Issue aims to discuss and bring contributions of all aspects of bioremediation using microalgae at laboratory and field research to:
• To remove heavy metals from water and soil
• Mechanisms of adsorption
• Value-added products
• Recovery of critical raw materials
• Challenges and new directions of research
Keywords: Bioremediation; Biosorption; Heavy metals; Mechanism; Microalgae
