Manuscript Topics

Energy efficiency is a crucial target in view of a sustainable energy future. Many countries have introduced different policies to improve energy efficiency. As an example, in Europe, the 2030 climate & energy framework has set sets rules and obligations for reaching a 30% energy savings. In this perspective, European Union has also decided to phase out inefficient light bulbs. Similarly, in U.S.A., according to the Energy Independence and Security Act, the manufacture of light bulbs that does not meet federal energy-efficiency standards is prohibited.

Energy efficiency target has pushed LED light bulb to replace inefficient light bulbs in both indoor and outdoor lighting system. The design of the lighting system in new buildings and streets, as well as lighting systems retrofit ask for carefully coping with harmonic distortion due to LED light bulbs. The problem is acerbated by dimming adopted to further reducing energy consumption when possible. Usually, only large harmonic source has been of concerns and the mitigation of their impact have been considered. On the other hand, the widespread use of LED bulbs in lighting systems involves greater problems since they are distributed harmonic sources, thus harmonic mitigation at moderate price is an open challenge.

In this perspective, this special issue especially welcomes innovative methods accounting for harmonic distortion at the planning stage of the lighting system. Works adopting artificial intelligence for harmonics mitigation are also encouraged.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

• Optimal design of the LED lighting system
• Smart dimming at lamp and lighting system level
• Active harmonic filter
• Power factor corrector
• Innovative solutions for harmonics mitigation
