  • As the Editor in Chief of AIMS Molecular Science, it is my pleasure to provide a summary of journal activities for 2023. Over the past three years, 2023 attracted the highest number of article submissions with 68 manuscripts received, leading to 20 high quality publications that averaged 115 days from time of submission to public access online. The majority of papers that were rejected for publication did not align with the scope of journal, meet the quality threshold, or they were not scientifically sound. Papers were published for work submitted by researchers across ten different countries. Nearly all publications were research articles and reviews. Within a two-year timeframe, the most popular articles attracted between 1,011 and 2,242 reads, with some articles being cited up to eight times in the past three years.

AIMS Molecular Science has 63 Editorial Board members across 22 countries. The distribution of board members does not correlate well with countries where articles are most often submitted, motivating personnel changes for 2024 to better align board membership with author country of origin. There are four proposed changes in 2024 that are intended to continue the upward trajectory for AIMS Molecular Science. First, leading scholars will be invited to join the board, emphasizing a bias toward those with expertise in biochemistry and molecular biology, and board members that have become inactive will be replaced. Second, well renowned scientists that are leaders in their field will be invited to contribute articles. Third, special issues on topics of biochemistry and molecular biology will be launched to attract articles on subject matter that is contemporary and attractive to the scientific community. Fourth, the influence of the journal will be expanded by indexing in top scientific databases to maximize high quality article exposure for broad audiences.

As I look ahead to 2024, I am excited for the attention to scientific integrity and publication of quality content that will continue to raise recognition for AIMS Molecular Science. I welcome submissions of research and review papers to the journal, especially as they relate to targeted subject matter in biochemistry and molecular biology. On behalf of the editorial team at AIMS Molecular Science, I thank you for your contribution to the success of this journal.

    Sincerely,

    Owen M. McDougal

Editor in Chief, AIMS Molecular Science
