Manuscript Topics
Research over the past decade has highlighted the importance of a better understanding of the interplay between immunity and biomechanics in a variety of biological phenomena related to both health and disease: from tissue formation (e.g., during embryogenesis) and tissue regeneration (e.g., tendon regeneration), to benign and malignant solid cancers, or even various fibroproliferative disorders (from pulmonary fibrosis, to hepatic cirrhosis, Dupuytren contracture and abnormal hypertrophic and keloid scars). This interplay between inflammatory and biomechanical processes occurs at both cell and tissue scales, which makes it difficult to understand the overall process.
Mathematical modelling and computational simulations have only started to shed light on some of the aspects involved in this interplay between immunity and biomechanics. However, there are still many open questions related, for example, to modelling the details of the immune-biomechanics interplay in the context of specific diseases, the mathematical (analytical and/or numerical) investigations of such complex multiscale models, data availability and model parametrization.
The aim of this Special Issue is to review the state-of-the art mathematical modelling approaches for understanding the interplay between immunity and biomechanics at cell and tissue scales (for various diseases or normal development). This Special Issue will cover a range of topics that could include (but are not limited to):
• Single-scale and multi-scale models for immunity and cell/tissue biomechanics
• Deterministic and stochastic models for immunity and cell/tissue biomechanics
• Computational approaches to investigate model dynamics
• Analytical approaches to investigate such mathematical models
• Data analysis and model parametrisation
• Sensitivity and uncertainty analysis methods
