Manuscript Topics

Research on microbial ecology is rapidly expanding, with a continuous stream of discovery of interactions and adaptations of micro-organisms, and their roles in ecosystems functioning (water, soils...) or in living organisms (guts) often in symbiosis. They are known to contribute to life on earth but also to be related to greenhouse emissions. At industrial levels, bio-remediation, food industry and more generally matter transformation that cannot be achieved in a purely chemical way, strongly rely on their services.

The growing knowledge of their diversity and versatility leads to fantastic challenges to understand, predict, supervise and optimize their behavior as complex interacting populations.

This special issue is dedicated to mathematical contributions for a better understanding and supervision of microbial ecosystems, related to existing observations or to guide relevant new experiments. A particular emphasis will be made on dynamical models and their simulations, including deterministic ordinary and partial differential equations, stochastic processes, individual-based models, or combinations of them, control and optimization.
