Special Issue Information
This Special Issue on fixed-point theory and its applications is a tribute to the legacy of Professor William Arthur Kirk, who departed on October 20, 2022.
Professor Kirk earned his Bachelor’s degree from DePauw University in 1958 and completed his Ph.D. at the University of Missouri in 1962. From 1962 to 1967, he served as an Assistant Professor at the University of California, Riverside. Later, in 1967, he assumed the role of Associate Professor at the University of Iowa, where he ascended to the position of full professorship in 1970.
Renowned as an exceptional mathematician of international stature, Professor Kirk made seminal contributions to Nonlinear Functional Analysis, particularly in the realm of fixed-point theory. He was pivotal in shaping the modern metric fixed point theory framework, profoundly influencing the field’s trajectory. Kirk’s Fixed-Point Theorem of 1964/1965 and the Caristi-Kirk Fixed-Point Theorem of 1976 are notable among his contributions. In recognition of his achievements and leadership, he was conferred with the title of Doctor Honoris Causa by Maria Curie-Sklodowska University, Poland, in 2004. Professor Kirk authored three books and 177 journal articles. Among his notable works are the books “Topics in Metric Fixed Point Theory”, co-authored with K. Goebel and published by Cambridge University Press in 1990, and “An Introduction to Metric Spaces and Fixed Point Theory”, co-authored with M. A. Khamsi and published by John Wiley, New York in 2001, which have attained the status of seminal texts in the field. Professor Kirk also mentored thirteen Ph.D. students during his illustrious career.
This Special Issue endeavors to solicit exceptional contributions from researchers in fixed-point theory and related areas of nonlinear functional analysis, echoing the scholarly pursuits dear to Professor Kirk’s heart.
