Manuscript Topics
Transportation is the backbone of the global trade network. Different modes of transportation allow people and goods to move across air, land, and sea. In the last years, we have seen important evolutions in transportation, due to shifting demand structures and societal and environmental changes. Besides, emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and the internet of things open new avenues for managing transportation activities. These changes and advancements have created new opportunities for further improving the transportation system. At the same time, they present new scientific and practical challenges.
Mathematical methods, covering a wide spectrum of models and algorithms, have long been used as effective decision-making tools for various problems arising from transportation. Facing new opportunities and challenges, innovative data analytics and optimization methods are required to further drive transportation toward a more intelligent, efficient, and sustainable industry.
The special issue of “Innovative mathematical methods for transportation research” for ERA invites manuscripts that focus on advances in utilizing mathematical methods for transportation studies. High-quality research and review papers that present recent theoretical, applied, or methodological advances concerning mathematical methods for transportation research are welcome.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
• Data mining for transportation studies
• Optimization models for transportation systems
• Urban logistics and transportation
• Machine learning for transportation studies
• Artificial intelligence in transportation
• Multimodal transportation management
• Sustainable transport systems
