Manuscript Topics
Industry 4.0 refers to the fourth Industrial Revolution, which is changing current factories in smart places where humans, machines and objects are connected in real time. A smart factory will be able to manufacture highly customized products under the conditions of highly flexibilized mass production. In this context, augmented, virtual and mixed reality technologies can play a key role; as a demonstration of this, they are considered among the nine enabling technologies (or pillars) that will power the transformation supported by Industry 4.0 initiative. This special issue aims at investigating how AR, & VR & MR can condition a smart manufacturing process, thus reducing errors, inefficiencies and production costs. Moreover, it is important to analyze and evaluate how humans can change their way of working both in terms of performance and safety.
Potential topics of AR & VR technologies in smart factories include, but are not limited to:
• maintenance and remote assistance
• training
• quality control
• safety management
• interaction design and visualization
• human-machine interfaces
• human-robot interfaces
• human centered design
• logistics
• collaborative industrial AR, VR & MR systems
• cognitive models and usability test reports
