Manuscript Topics

Social media use is growing on a global scale. The wide range of communication capabilities that social media offer users is crucial for their widespread acceptance. However, problematic social media use is increasing, particularly among children, adolescents and young adults. The inability of users to use social media within reasonable limits is now a major public health issue, with particular implications for children. Problematic social media use can even lead to addiction, creating even more problems for users.
In addition, problematic social media use is also associated with mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression symptoms, stress, loneliness, sleep disorders, self-esteem, etc. Particular attention should be given to the problematic TikTok use, as it is a recently developed social platform and research on it is limited. Moreover, TikTok users are predominantly children and adolescents and therefore even more attention is needed. Also, the particular functioning of TikTok makes it more likely to be addictive than other social media.
Special emphasis should be given by researchers on the factors that lead to problematic social media use, such as psychological factors, social factors, personality traits, demographic characteristics, etc.
This Special issue will explore the association between social media use and mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, distress, loneliness, self-esteem, well-being, sleep disturbances etc. Moreover, papers addressing the predictors of problematic social media use or social media addiction are especially welcome. Since literature on TikTok use is poor we strongly recommend scholars to pay special attention on this field. Researchers are invited to submit manuscripts addressing these challenges in the form of original research papers, systematic review articles, meta-analyses articles, expert opinions, and commentaries.
