Behavioral dysregulation refers to difficulties modulating actions in response to changing environments, circumstances, and emotions. Behavioral dysregulation is strongly associated with emotional dysregulation and often co-occurs with mental health problems, such as post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and anxiety. Examples of behavioral dysregulation include overconsumption of social media, food, alcohol, pornography, video games, and shopping as well as under engagement in health behaviors, such as exercise, sleep routines, and social activity.
Behavioral dysregulation arises from multilevel determinants, including perturbations in the reward and arousal systems and disruptions in the interpersonal learning environment. Stressful events, such as adverse childhood events, trauma, loss, and discrimination, can serve as the catalyst for the development of behavioral dysregulation. Sleep disruption is another key vulnerability factor for behavioral dysregulation, often co-occurring with or resulting from stressful events. Interdisciplinary research is necessary to understand the interactions between stress and sleep and the expression of behavioral dysregulation. This topic is highly relevant to researchers in disciplines such as public health, psychology, economics, and neuroscience.
