Manuscript Topics
People worldwide are living longer. By 2030, 1 in 6 people in the world will be aged 60 years or over. At this time the amount of the population aged 60 years and over will increase from 1 billion in 2020 to 1.4 billion. Unfortunately, general aging processes can influence the development of several chronic disturbances such as age-related chronic metabolic, cardiovascular and neurological diseases that lead to multiple repercussions in the patient's quality of life. However, a good lifestyle including regular physical activity and healthy diet is associated with longer health span, while reduced mobility and unbalanced diet are detrimental, or even fatal in the elderly. Although more research is needed to understand mechanisms linking ageing to metabolic and degenerative pathologies, we recommend the urgency of adequate policy to increase the quality of life of aged people.
Keywords: ageing, quality of life, lifestyle, chronic and metabolic diseases
