Manuscript Topics
I would like to extend an invitation to submit any type of article on marijuana and the cannabinoids for a special issue of AIMS Neuroscience. I can think of no more a deserving and necessary topic currently than marijuana, the cannabinoids and their targets including the endocannabinoid system. Unfortunately, principally due to its recreational use in western countries during the last 60 years, marijuana had a bad reputation as a drug of abuse. Little if any significantly funded research was performed despite being used by humans for thousands of years for recreation and medicinal use. Only recently has the cannabis genus (which includes the species Cannabis sativa, Cannabis indica and Cannabis ruderalis) been investigated properly for its pharmacological potential. The first recorded medical use was to treat pain, inflammation, seizures and nausea in China 5,000 years ago and so it is very encouraging to see this potential goldmine of natural products finally receiving the attention it deserves. The significant reduction of seizures in children treated with cannabidiol that were refractory to other more conventional medications alone warrants funding marijuana research. In this special issue I would therefore like to invite the submission of manuscripts addressing any aspect of marijuana or cannabinoid neuropharmacology, metabolism, physiology and the endocannabinoid system including any phytocannabinoids, endogenous cannabinoids and synthetics. Submissions can range from biochemical to organismal including behavioral actions.
