Manuscript Topics

The study of creative and insightful problem solving has a long history in psychology starting in the era of Gestalt psychology and continuing to be a major field of study through the founding of cognitive science. Understanding the contributions of different human neural systems to creative and insightful problem solving has been a growing part of our scientific understanding of these types of problem solving in the past two decades. There are a number of outstanding research questions in this area that are being addressed with a variety of neuroscience methods. This research is complicated by the fact that multiple neural systems contribute to this higher-order cognitive ability including memory, cognitive control, semantics, and affect. For this special issue, we seek papers addressing the role that human neural systems play in creative and insightful problem solving broadly defined. Potential topics include but are not limited to: the neural basis of the subjective experience of insight, how interactions of neural systems contribute to creative problem solving, and computational or other mechanistic theories of insightful or creative problem solving.
