The human gut is colonized by microbes which outnumber the cells in the human body. While the biodiversity of these microbial strains is limited to a few phyla, recent studies have identified taxonomic differences in the types and abundance of species and strains which allows for the generation of unique microbiome signatures for each individual.

The gut microbiota acts as a metabolic organ that interacts with the host immune system conferring a natural resistance to pathogenic colonization allowing selection of functionally specialized microbial cells which help promote intestinal homeostasis. Perturbations in the gut microbiota composition or dysbiosis has been linked to human diseases in the gut and several other organ systems. High throughput metagenomics can be used to generate genomic profiles of the gut microbiota which may lead to the identification of new biomarkers and therapeutic targets for human disease.

This special issue welcomes contributions related to this topic with established and updated studies about the following areas :
