Manuscript Topics

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) was an entirely novel virus in the 1980s when the index cases were recognized. Through the advent of HAART, there has been much progress and we now have the privilege of living in a post-acute infection era with a new phenomenon, ageing with HIV. Nonetheless, in spite of the longevity conferred by treatment, people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) continue to experience significantly increased rates of psychiatric illness, concurrent with syndemics, distinct synergistic biosocial processes that continue to drive disparities across populations living with HIV. The complex biosocial environment, pervasive stigma of HIV, and the transmutation of these factors at the biologic level drive an excess burden of disease.

This special issue will focus on the complexities of HIV and mental health, specifically the neuropsychiatric impact of living with HIV. Submissions will address with the following topics:

Key words: biosocial, burden of illness, cognitive impairment, depression, HIV/AIDS, mental health, PLWHA, quality of life, syndemic(s), substance use.
