Cellular gene expression programs are dependent on transcriptional and chromatin regulators. Control gene expression is essential for cell identity and function, and dysregulation of gene expression can causes diseases. Mutations that alter gene expression can contribute to malignant transformation and metabolic diseases to name a few. Binding of transcription factors and co-factors to defined DNA sequence elements can be influenced by genetic changes in regulatory sequences, and genetic and epigenetic modifications of transcription factors and co-factors. In addition, chromatin regulators and non-coding RNAs influence gene expression programs. The global effects of some of mutations have highlighted the network of physiological processes regulated by them and provided insights into disease mechanisms.
The special issue, Transcriptional Regulation in Cancers and Metabolic Diseases, focuses on dysregulation of gene expression in disease. Original manuscripts, short communications, or reviews relevant to the subject are invited.
