Geochronology is a scientific field devoted to dating the history of the Earth using physical, chemical, or biological methods. It represents the backbone of modern geosciences, underpinning our research practices toward a better understanding of the fundamental natural processes that govern the evolution of the Earth. Solid chronological work can not only provide a precise timing of a geological event, but also yield a powerful constraint on the tempo of a geological process.
The past decades have witnessed great technological advances on the absolute dating methods, which not only gave rise to some novel techniques, but also broadened the application of the established dating methods in the geological and archaeological sciences. Yet many questions are still awaiting the answers in this field. For example, how can we push the limit of a dating method? How can we overcome the radiocarbon plateau effect? How to model the age-depth relationship in an episodically depositional system?
This special issue of AIMS Geosciences would like to serve as a venue for innovations in addressing these great challenges in geochronology. We welcome contributions including, but not limited to: (1) cutting-edge dating methodologies based on solid principles in physics, chemical and biology; (2) novel applications of the dating methods to solve important questions in geological or archaeological science; and (3) state-of-the-art computing algorithms and/or statistical models of the age-depth relationship with software.
Keywords: geochronology, numerical dating, geosciences, archaeology
