The recently enacted Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) contains a number of provisions emphasizing coordinated primary and behavioral healthcare such as the creation of “health homes” for those with chronic illnesses and the requirement that insurance policies offered on the healthcare exchanges include behavioral healthcare coverage at parity with medical coverage. States have considerable latitude in implementing these and other ACA provisions that support the integration of primary and behavioral healthcare. Little is yet known about how the models of integrated care are being deployed, the characteristics of the newly insured populations that have begun receiving health care as a result of the ACA, and preliminary outcomes. This special issue of AIMS Public Health seeks and will publish papers on these and issues closely related to the prevision of fully integrated and/or coordinated care for people with behavioral health care issues that include serious mental illnesses and substance abuse issues. Papers describing state-based models of health homes, the populations served, and preliminary outcomes are especially encouraged as are papers on integrated care for criminal justice and other underserved populations.
