During embryonic development neuronal cell death is necessary for the correct wiring of the nervous system. However, this natural process strikes back upon injury and in several neurodegenerative diseases with deleterious consequences. Understanding the signaling pathways and the players is fundamental to discover new targets to design new modulators of cell death with possible therapeutically interventions.

Different processes increase neuronal cell death like growth factor deprivation; protein misfolded aggregation;endoplasmic reticulum stress; neuronal re-entry in the cell cycle or misregulated autophagy.

The aim of this special issue is to have a wide vision of the several signalling pathways implicated in neuronal cell death. The scope of the issues is wide; including embryonic development, aging and neurodegenerative diseases; central and peripheral nervous system; and the cell types involved; glia, microglia or neurons.
