Manuscript Topics

With the aging society, vascular and valvular calcification will represent an increasingly relevant clinical problem.
Whether many data suggest that vascular and valvular calcification share many underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms, some biological differences are emerging as well, suggesting the reasons for different outcomes and response to therapy observed in the clinical setting.
As there are many aspects still under discussion in this field, this special issue will focus on the following aspects:

 •  Common biological mechanisms underlying the crosstalk between vascular and valvular calcification;
 •  Differences in vascular and valvular calcification development;
 •  Laboratory biomarkers: prospective and pitfalls;
 •  Imaging techniques: the gold standard to assess vascular and valvular calcification;
 •  Omic technologies to assess vascular and valvular calcification as a challenge for the future;
 •  Aging and cardiovascular calcification;
 •  Gender differences in cardiovascular calcification;
 •  Development of effective therapy strategies.
