Manuscript Topics

Head and neck cancer is the 6th leading cause of cancer mortality worldwide accounting for nearly 300,000 deaths each year. Despite advances in treatment, the 5 year survival rate has remained unchanged over the last few decades. Although alcohol consumption and tobacco smoking are well-known etiological agents of head and neck cancer, gene polymorphisms and human papilloma virus and Epstein Barr virus infections play a role in cancer development and progression. Delineating the underlying mechanism of cancer development, and identifying genetic and molecular alterations are indispensable in personalized medicine. In addition, dependable diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers are needed for improved cancer care. Although cancer cure is the aim of most treatment plans, treatment-related morbidities often limit attainment of the goal and reduce a patient’s quality of life. Medicines that avert head and neck cancer therapy-related complications without compromising cancer cure are a necessity.

With these concerns in mind, this special issue on Head and Neck Cancer will focus on studies that involve assessment of risk factors, predictive and prognostic biomarkers, novel therapeutics, and side-effects of cancer treatment. Of special interest, also, are areas of research that elucidate genomic alterations and signal transduction abnormalities that promote head and neck cancer or contribute to its aggressive phenotype. Genetic and molecular epidemiological studies are also welcome.

Key Words: cancer, oral, head and neck, HPV, EBV, eIF4E, EGFR, PI3K/Akt, oncogene, tumor suppressor, biomarker, side-effect, treatment.
