Genetic Epidemiology is a scientific discipline devoted to the study of the role of genetic factors not only in determining health and disease in families and in populations, but also the interplay of such genetic factors with environmental factors. Genetic Epidemiology is a uniquely interdisciplinary field that seeks to understand both the genetic and environmental factors and how they interact to produce various diseases and traits in humans. Both quantitative and qualitative traits may be of interest in order to understand any possible genetic basis. Candidate genes are studied as they are expressed in people living in certain environments, and environmental factors are studied as they affect people who have certain genotypes.
Genetic epidemiology uses unique case-control, family, and population-based designs, and genotyping from multiple sources. For the clinicians, the goal has been to learn about genetic susceptibility to disease and genetic determinants of therapeutic responsiveness. Previous studies were mainly oriented to rare diseases, but recent efforts are directed toward complex disorders.
This issue invites articles that address topics such as: individual medicine in health and disease; impact of environment in different common human genotypes; impact of GWAs in health and disease; a new medicine approach based in NGS and aCGH results; advantage and cost-efficiency of extreme phenotype sampling in rare-variant analyses; relevance of genetic analysis in new therapies; and an approach to use data from different sources to increase efficiency in making genotype calls for rare SNPs.
