The management of urban waste is one of the major problems that affect the environmental quality and sustainability of developed countries. Indeed, there is an increasing awareness that urban waste management practices have a serious impact on the environment, welfare, health, and quality of life. Thus, the management of urban solid waste has become an important service provided by the city councils to maintain acceptable hygienic and aesthetic conditions in their cities.

Since the mid of 1980s, urban waste management systems have undergone important changes to reach collection and recycling targets set by local and national authorities and increase their cost efficiency at the same time. In order to achieve improvement goals, city councils implement several strategies, including technological innovation, procurement policies, subsidies to support collection, treatment and recycling, incentives to motivate citizens to reduce waste production.

The aim of this special issue is to collect research, industry papers and cases on the urban waste management approaches and practices that address the above issues from any adequate perspective, including economic analysis, modeling of systems, behavioral forecasting, and policy assessment.

The special issue welcomes papers on the following topics, but is not limited to:
• Cost of urban waste management
• Urban waste collection practices
• Waste management service procurement strategies
• Urban waste reduction and prevention systems
• Waste material reuse and recycling best practices
• Urban waste management policies
• Education, training and incentives supporting waste management policies
• Municipal waste to energy technologies and performance
