special issue of AIMS Environmental Science:
Theme: Human biomonitoring and health impacts of existing and emerging environmental contaminants
Humans expose to environmental contaminants through ingestion, inhalation, and dermal adsorption of environmental media such as air, soil, water, products, and food. Human biomonitoring is the direct measurement of a substance or its components and their metabolites in humans. The measurement is often carried out in blood and urine and sometimes in other tissues and fluids such as hair, nails, saliva and breast milk. The measurement indicates the levels of measured substances that are present in a person at a given time, and is often considered to be the "gold standard" for assessing human exposure to these substances. Although measurements of contaminants in various environmental media provide information on the sources of environmental contaminants, human biomonitoring generates direct readings of the load of contaminants in humans that incorporates bioaccumulation, excretion, and other toxico-kinetic parameters. Therefore, human biomonitoring has become a pivotal tool for the assessment of the health risks posed by environmental contaminants.
This special issue on Human biomonitoring and health impacts of existing and emerging environmental contaminants solicits articles that report levels of environmental contaminants, with a focus on emerging contaminants, in humans and report observed health effects of such contaminants in humans and relations between contaminants load in humans and their presence in environmental media people expose to. Articles describing progress in analytical methods and data interpretation of human biomonitoring are also welcome.
