Manuscript Topics

Moved by environmental and economic aspects, the proliferation of renewable energy sources (RES) has spread to power systems around the world. In this context, their intermittent and stochastic nature can cause various operational and stability problems. In particular, there are three broad challenges when it comes to a power system with a high penetration of RES: stability, flexibility, and adequacy.

This research topic aims to highlight current emerging technologies in terms of renewable generation in converter-dominated power systems. Power converter and RES controls interfaced by power electronics are relevant to improve the stability of the power system. Exploiting the potential of RES and energy storage systems is also important for the stable and economic operation of power systems. Energy management and coordination among thousands of distributed devices are issues that must be resolved for the integration of RES.

This special issue is therefore intended to encourage academic and industrial researchers to present their latest findings on advanced technologies and theories, ideas, and solutions for power systems with high penetration of renewable sources. The main topics of interest for this special issue include, but are not limited to:

• Renewable energy sources impact analisys and integration on modern power systems
• Distributed energy resources impact and integration on modern power systems
• Demand response impact and integration on modern power systems
• Advanced solutions for control of power system with a high share of RES
• Advanced solutions for improving stability, flexibility, and adequacy of modern power systems
• Energy storage system application for stability improvement and integration on modern power systems
• Advanced power electronics technologies
• Advanced energy management system
• Advanced control theory for power system analysis and control
• Information and communication technologies for power system control
• Application of artificial intelligence to power system operation
