Energy is the carrier of society development; it is also a direct indication of human quality of life. Accompanied by the depletion of fossil fuels and related environmental footprint, using energy in a sustainable way is one of the most urgent targets that need to be achieved in the short-medium future. To this end, materials are and will continue to be the enablers of energy and other technologies in modern society.

Materials for Sustainable Energy Technologies is a special issue launched by the AIMS Energy journal for interdisciplinary publication of basic research, deployment, scale-up and commercialization, environmental impact of renewable and sustainable energy and related environmental technologies. By gathering information from physicists, chemists, biologists, and engineers, we are attempting to build up an issue with sophisticated and state-of-the-art knowledge on the mateiral science/technology for sustainability applications.

The special edition covers experimental and theoretical aspects related to electricity and heat generation, conversion, storage, and efficiency as such:
• Energy storage, Batteries, Fuel cells, Hydrogen storage; 
• Hydropower, Wind power, Photovoltaics and solar cells;
• Biomass, Hydrogen production, Nuclear and Fusion;
