Manuscript Topics

Inflammation is critical for host defense and repair of tissue injury. Inflammation contributes to many complex diseases including autoimmune disease, metabolic syndrome, neurodegenerative disorder, cancer, and cardiovascular disease. Inflammation is also associated with aging and age-related disorders. A variety of exogenous or endogenous stimuli trigger inflammation. The inflammatory response involves coordination of a multitude of cellular and molecular events. The acute and chronic inflammatory response is orchestrated by interaction of cells in the innate immune system and adaptive immune system. The subcellular organelles such as mitochondria and lysosome contribute to the inflammatory response through oxidative stress and autophagy respectively. The inflammatory response involves an intertwined intercellular and intracellular signaling network, triggering many molecular events such as transcription, translation, cytoskeletal rearrangement, and actomyosin contraction. Many molecules are involved in the inflammatory response including growth factors, cytokines, chemokines, nuclear factors, matrix metalloproteinases, and toxic molecules such as nitric oxide or free radicals. The aim of this special issue is to gather the latest information on molecular mechanisms of inflammation and discuss the imbalance in the inflammatory response and the pathological mechanisms.
